Emergency Lighting

Illumination for Exit Routes

Why Emergency Lighting is Essential

Emergency lighting is a legal requirement for “non-domestic” buildings in the UK – and this includes the common areas of a HMO (House of Multiple Occupancy).

This means that all commercial buildings should have illumination provided to guide occupants along emergency routes to exits in the event of the failure of the mains power because of a fire.

Every commercial building has an appointed person responsible for making sure their building complies with fire safety regulations – including emergency lighting that is fit for purpose and properly installed.

We work with a wide variety of organisations, businesses, landlords, letting agents and building management companies across north Wiltshire and around the city of Bath to make sure appropriate emergency lighting systems are installed on their premises, fully compliant with the regulations and British Standard code of practice for emergency lighting (BS 5266-1).

Emergency Escape Lighting for all Buildings

If you become trapped in a burning building in the dark or dim light, with thick smoke pervading the air, you’ll be grateful for the best practice emergency lighting system that the building management had professionally installed by a BAFE certified company like ours!

Our experts are able to undertake a complete emergency lighting system project for any size or type of building, including the planning and design of the lighting, the positioning of the lights and signs, proficient installation of all the fittings, and the ongoing periodic testing and maintenance of the system.

Every building is different and therefore has its own specific requirements for the extent and intensity of emergency escape illumination.

We will survey the building, assess its normal occupancy and use, and install an appropriate emergency lighting system to suit.

How Emergency Lighting Works

The most common type of emergency lighting chosen by our clients are self-contained luminaires – units which contain all the essential parts such as a battery, charger and lamp so they are able to function as independent emergency lights.

These self-contained luminaires come in various forms such as surface-mounted bulkhead lights, or square, round or recessed lights that can be fitted on walls or ceilings. The latest emergency lighting units use LED as their light source because of their low energy consumption and ability for instant illumination.

You can also have a string of luminaires which are powered by a central control unit, with a battery and charger located remotely to power different lights in different locations.

Part of an emergency lighting system consists of illuminated signs – usually simple box lighting units that are mounted on, or suspended from, the ceiling.
